Top 20 Packing Tips
From our years of experiencing moving homes, offices, and businesses throughout the Denver metro area, we’ve compiled a list of the top 20 packing tips.
• Give yourself plenty of time to get packed. Start at least 30 days in advance.
• Pack a few boxes every day, and begin with items you won’t need immediately.
• To protect your items, use clean, sturdy moving boxes with lids.
• Use appropriate size moving boxes for item(s).
• Make sure each box has at least 3 strips of tape along the bottom seams of the box.
• Don’t overpack boxes. Stop when you’ve reached 40-50 pounds per box.
• Label each box as you go, with the contents of the box and the room where it belongs.
• If there’s anything in the box that could break, mark the box clearly with “FRAGILE.”
• If you have the original boxes that came with your computers or electrical equipment, use them; if not, bubble-wrap each component before placing into a box.
• Before you pack liquid items (such as cleaning supplies or toiletries), make sure the lids are screwed on tightly.
• Don’t ever pack flammable items.
• Use wardrobe boxes to move clothes that are on hangers. This saves time and saves you from having to iron or dry clean the clothes again. With local moves, we’re happy to provide free loaner wardrobes boxes.
• Pack lamps with care by removing the light bulbs, lamp shades, finials, and harps.
• Protect artwork, mirrors, paintings, and pictures with bubble wrap, paper pads and mirror boxes.
• Empty the contents of your desk into boxes.
• Leave everything in your 2-drawer filing cabinets. We can move these with items in them.
• Be sure to empty the top two drawers of your 4-drawer filing cabinets. This keeps the filing cabinets from bowing.
• Fireproof cabinets need to be removed of all items due to their weight.
• Don’t worry about emptying clothing from dressers or chests of drawers. We can move these pieces of furniture with clothing in them. Just be sure to remove anything fragile or delicate.
• Use dish boxes and packing paper for packing dishes, china, and crystal. Avoid newspaper, because the ink can stain your items. Be generous with the packing paper, using at least one or two pieces of packing paper per item. Stuff the paper inside glasses, cups, and stemware, and place glassware and dishes upright, not flat in the box.
• Pack important paperwork, valuables, and sentimental items separately, and keep these with you at all times.
